TNPSC Group 1 (Combined Civil Services Examination-I) is the highest-level state civil services exam in Tamil Nadu, conducted annually by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). It recruits Group A officers such as Deputy Collector, DSP, Assistant Commissioner and District Registrar at Pay Level 22, basic pay ₹56,100, with ₹72,000–₹85,000 in hand. Selection runs through Prelims, Mains and an interview; any graduate aged 21–32 (with category relaxations) can apply, and there is no limit on attempts within the age window.
TNPSC Group 2 / 2A (Combined Civil Services Examination-II) recruits Group B officers in Tamil Nadu, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). Posts include Sub-Registrar, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer, Probation Officer and Senior Revenue Inspector, mostly at Pay Level 18, basic pay ₹37,200 with ₹45,000–₹55,000 in hand. The two streams differ in one step: Group 2 includes an oral interview, while Group 2A is decided on the written mains alone. Any graduate aged 18 or above (with category relaxations) can apply.
TNPSC Group 4 & VAO (Combined Civil Services Examination-IV) is the most popular TNPSC exam, open to SSLC (10th-pass) candidates and conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). It recruits Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant, Typist, Bill Collector and Forest Guard posts at Pay Level 8, basic pay ₹19,500 with ₹23,000–₹28,000 in hand. Selection is through a single objective (OMR) written exam with no interview, making it the most accessible entry into Tamil Nadu government service.
