Reading the cut-offs
Three patterns to keep in mind when setting a target score.
01 · Aim above OC
Target the OC male cut-off, not the qualifying minimum.
Qualifying marks (40 % / 30 %) only get you into mains. The real cut-off, the marks that secure a final selection, runs much higher.
02 · Syllabus shifts
Cut-offs can double after a syllabus revision.
Group 1 went from 120 in 2017 to 204 in 2019 once the new syllabus dropped reasoning-heavy questions. Old papers undershoot the bar.
03 · Category gap
The OC-to-ST spread can be 30+ marks.
Reservation closes a wider gap than you think, but only if you actually clear sectional cut-offs in each subject paper.

What is a TNPSC cut-off mark?
A cut-off is the minimum aggregate score required to clear a given stage of a TNPSC exam in a given category. Cut-offs differ by exam, year, category (GT, BC, BCM, MBC, SC, ST), gender, and post. The analyser above lets you compare every category against the same exam and year, side by side.
Why do cut-offs change every year?
Cut-offs are a function of paper difficulty and the number of vacancies, a harder paper or fewer vacancies pushes the cut-off down, an easier paper or larger notification pushes it up. Looking at 3–5 years of cut-offs together gives you a far more reliable target than any single year.
What's the difference between prelims cut-off and final cut-off?
Prelims cut-off is the score needed to clear the screening test and qualify for mains or oral test. Final cut-off is the aggregate score (mains + interview, where applicable) needed for a job offer. The gap between the two tells you how much room you have to improve after prelims.
Is the cut-off data sourced from TNPSC?
Yes. All cut-offs are sourced from official TNPSC notifications and rank lists, then normalised so you can compare across years. We refresh the dataset whenever TNPSC publishes new cut-offs after a recruitment cycle.
Can I see male vs female cut-offs separately?
