What the in-hand number does not tell you

The headline figure leaves money on the table, here is the rest of the package.

01 · DA revisions
DA gets revised twice a year.
The 22% figure tracks the current rate. Each revision adds 2 – 4% to your in-hand without you doing anything.
02 · City tier matters
Chennai pays 8% more in HRA.
X-class cities (16%) pay nearly double Z-class (8%), the same post can take home thousands more depending on posting.
03 · Beyond cash
Medical, CGHS, and pension on top.
Group A roles get government quarters or higher HRA, GPF, NPS contribution, and CGHS coverage for the family, not reflected in the in-hand number.

Frequently asked questions

What is the in-hand salary for TNPSC Group 1 posts?
Group 1 posts (Deputy Collector, DSP, Asst. Commissioner, District Registrar and others) start at Pay Level 22, basic ₹56,100 with current DA, HRA, and other allowances added. Use the calculator above with your posting district to get a precise in-hand figure for your post and grade.
How are DA and HRA calculated?
DA is computed as a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year by the Tamil Nadu government in line with the AICPI index. HRA depends on city classification, Chennai is class X (highest), most districts are class Y, rural postings are class Z. The calculator applies the current rates automatically.
Which deductions apply to a TNPSC government salary?
Standard deductions include NPS contribution (10% of basic + DA), professional tax (₹208 per month in Tamil Nadu), and income tax based on the new or old regime you choose. Some categories also see voluntary deductions for group insurance.
Is this calculator based on the 7th Pay Commission?
Yes. All pay matrices, DA percentages, HRA classifications and deductions follow the 7th Pay Commission as adopted by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The matrix is updated whenever the state issues a fresh DA order.
Will my actual salary match the calculator exactly?
The calculator is accurate to within ₹100–₹500 of your actual in-hand. Minor variations come from district-specific allowances, dependent allowances, and one-off deductions. Treat the result as a strong estimate, not a payslip.
